Intent

Our ‘Intent’ – in designing our bespoke, curriculum is to maximise the potential and opportunities of all of our pupils; intellectually, socially, morally, emotionally and culturally. We believe our curriculum should be relevant and have a strong local resonance with pupils. In doing so, our intention is that all learners reach their full potential through a curriculum that is tangible, real and engaging.

Implementation

Physical activity helps to improve health, reduces stress and improves concentration whilst also promoting correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Students have 2, hour long PE lessons weekly to be develop and strengthen the skills identified in the National Curriculum. In line with the national curriculum objectives, the school has invested in the Get Set for PE resource for our chosen core sports, Gymnastics, Dance and Games in KS1 and KS2 to ensure the correct terminology is being used and to promote progression in these units of work. In addition, the Sports leaders provide units of work and general resources to support the teaching of Sport and Games.

The daily mile is encouraged in each class to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing.  Outside coaching providers are use in the school to expose the students to a range of inclusive, unique and engaging sporting activities. Inter-sporting events and county events are timetabled throughout each half term allowing all keys stages to access a variety of activities promoting the spirit of the game, encourage cooperation and promote the school’s learning behaviours and values.

Impact

All students are given the opportunity to participate in Federation sport competitions termly. The competitions are Key Stage appropriate and provide opportunities for students to apply and showcase their athletic skills. Alongside the curriculum, the range of clubs offered are hugely popular with our students, which run all year round. Our students develop the confidence and skills to try new sports, maintain motivation for exercise and embrace the mental health benefits of physical activity.
