Reading & Phonics

At Iford and Kingston CE Primary School  we use the accredited Phonics program; Sounds Write. This aims to ensure all children are receiving quality first provision of phonic skills through a well-structured, sequential synthetic phonic program. We implement the program through the vision that high quality phonics will be delivered from the development of greater teacher knowledge.  Sounds-Write is a speech-to-print phonics program that enables the children to develop skills on speech as well as learning the symbols for sounds. We teach the children sounds and symbols in words from the start of their education and follow a well-paced and structured phonics overview that is underpinned by the three core principles of skills, concepts and code knowledge.

Core Principles

Sounds write supports our ambition that all children at Iford and Kingston develop skills to have “good word recognition and good language comprehension” as guided by the “Simple view of reading”.  We teach this program through a clear scripted approach which helps children receive consistency in their teaching and helps educate parents on ways to teach and support their child at home. The scripted program enables teachers and children to focus solely on the key skills of phonics and the routine which is clearly embedded within the children from the start of the program. We aim for 75-80% accuracy within a unit for a child to be able to progress to the next unit. If when revisited a child has been identified as struggling, they will have access to a follow up phonic session to address misconceptions and mistakes.

Sounds Write - Initial Code Videos

Year 1 have made some wonderful videos to support children and families with the pronunciation of the sounds.

The videos consist of the sounds of the alphabet with exception to 'q'.

There are not many words in the English dictionary with the single letter 'q' and Sounds Write does not include this as part of their phonics approach. Instead children are taught to read and spell 'q u' which is pronounced /k/w/.
